How to Unclog Rain Showerheads

Rain showerheads are the latest in luxury bath items. However, your little piece of luxury cannot be thoroughly enjoyed if your showerhead is clogged up and water flow is sluggish. Mineral deposits and calcium, both of which are very common in water, tend to clog up the small areas of the showerhead over time. Regular cleaning of the showerhead is a very effective way to increase water pressure and prevent a full replacement.

Step 1  Wrap a cloth or rag around the arm of the showerhead to prevent damage during removal.

Step 2  Place an adjustable wrench around the collar of the showerhead and begin to unscrew. If the entire shower arm turns, use a pair groove-joint pliers to counter-turn the showerhead and allow you to unscrew the collar.

Step 3  Remove the showerhead and inspect for damage that may have led to the clog. If the showerhead undamaged, move forward with cleaning. If the showerhead is damaged, consider replacing the showerhead completely.

Step 4  Run water through the showerhead in the opposite direction of the outlets. Use a straight pin to push any debris back through the holes in the opposite direction to be flushed out by the water.

Step 5  Soak the showerhead in white vinegar or a lime deposit removal cleaner to remove any debris that was not washed away. Use a scrub brush to brush away any persistent debris.

Step 6  Reassemble the showerhead in the order that it was disassembled and tighten in place. Turn on the water to check the water pressure to ensure all clogs in the showerhead have been removed.
